Social Programme

The special programme for accompanying persons is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday,
June 12 and 13 2017. We have selected a variety of interesting activities you can choose from, to experience the entertaining city of Maastricht.

In the fee for the accompanying persons during the fib Symposium 2017 the following activities are included:
– Opening session on Monday
– Welcome reception on Monday
– Exhibition, including lunches, from Monday – Wednesday
– Formal closing session on Tuesday

All tours in our partner programme are guided. Please bear in mind that you must register for the symposium as an accompanying person, before you can purchase tickets for the partner programme.
The point of departure for all the tours is the symposium venue: MECC Maastricht, by bus.

Citywalk (max. 20 persons per guide)

A perfect way to get to know Maastricht! A guide will take you through the historic city centre and show you the city’s most beautiful sights. During the walk, you’ll discover the picturesque streets of the Stokstraat quarter, the charming Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square, and the famous Vrijthof square. You’ll also see the city ramparts, the Helpoort, and the Jeker quarter.

Listen to the fascinating stories and amusing anecdotes to learn all about Maastricht’s history and its progression from Roman settlement to important garrison city and early industrial powerhouse. You’ll also hear about Maastricht’s typical way of life, known as the ‘Mestreechter Geis’ (the Spirit of Maastricht). It’s a fun activity that is fascinating, amusing, and educational!

Cruise on the Meuse (no min./max. persons)
starts 11.00 h and ends 12.00 h.

This boat trip gives you an excellent overall view of Maastricht from the water. The trip takes you past the historic St. Servaas bridge, the new Céramique district, the Gouvernement building and St. Pietersberg Hill. Just before the Belgian border, the boat turns back towards the centre of Maastricht.
* Boat trip on the Meuse of roughly 50 minutes.

Caves St. Pietersberg – Northern System (max. 35 persons per guide)
starts 10.00 h and ends 11.00 h.
Costs: € 25,00

Guided tour in the Northern Corridor System of the Caves St. Pietersberg. Even today the walls and ceilings give information about the way in which the ‘block breakers’ worked. On the walls can be found numerous interesting inscriptions and drawings, some of which are very old. The temperature in the corridors is a constant ten degrees Celsius. A vest, sweater or jacket and robust footwear are advised.

Workshop pie baking (“vlaai” the famous local pie) (min. 8 persons, max. 20 per group)
starts 10.00 h and ends 12.00 h.
Costs: € 40,00

The workshop is given at a unique location, viz. 17th century old watermill. You will be welcomed with a nice cup of coffee and Limburger pie. Then under the guidance of the baker himself, you bake a ‘Vlaai’. You will learn everything about the bakery business. Every participant will take their own Vlaai back home!

The Tasting Tour (max. 20 persons per guide)

This parade of delicacies will introduce you to all the culinary delights that Maastricht
has to offer! Take a walk with a guide who not only knows the highlights of the city, but has a unique eye for the local specialities. On the way, you will make four short stops to taste our local treasures.

Famous store which specialises in tea, coffee, nuts, cookies and related products. The window alone is already worth visiting.
Our guide will tell the stories, show you the shop and hand over a package of typical tea, coffee cookies and nuts.
Visit Atelier Pauline
Designer Pauline will explain the exclusive hats she designs for both men and women, as well as her bags, jewellery, and felt accessories.
Coffee/tea with fruit pie
In the old Bisschopsmolen your treat is a delicious piece of homemade fruit pie. Of course with a cup of coffee or tea. This ancient bakery & watermill in the heart of the city centre has a great history, your guide will show you around and tell all about it!
Tasting at Adriaan de Smaakmaker
Visit to Adriaan de Taste maker. In this great shop, everything is created according to own recipe and craft manner. You can take a peek in the kitchen and of course taste the delicious dressings, condiments, mustard and jam!
Tasting at Darq, wine and chocolate
New in town: international concept all about chocolate. Luxury products, great original and new taste & recipes.
See, taste and enjoy: three different sweet white wines with a variety of chocolate products.
